Pull up a chair...

For 10 years I have written a weekly newspaper column called On the Porch. But the title is kind of misleading. I have been On the Porch alright -- griping, philosophying and opining as this crazy world passes by. But I've been sort of alone. All you do is read. Wouldn't On the Porch be more intellectually stimulating and fulfilling by having a whole bunch of us chatting on the porch together? After all, isn't that what porches are for? Well, thanks to modern blog technology, we can!

So here it is, the grand unveiling of the Monroe County Reporter's new blog -- On the Porch - Uninterrupted. This will give me a place to spout off on a daily basis, and you a chance to respond in real-time. This blog is not aimed at replacing my regular On the Porch column in the Reporter. The printed page is somewhat sacred and I hope to continue to give my best effort of the week there.

But here, you will find a different animal. Less refined perhaps (I know what you're thinking -- if that's possible for me!). Shorter, with links to other articles I find interesting. And of course your feedback.

Because this blog is mine, it will naturally be a reflection of my interests and beliefs. Regular readers may have an idea of what those are. First, I am a Monroe Countian. A newspaper friend and I bought the Monroe County Reporter in 2007. My grandfather was a football coach here at Mary Persons in the 1940s and 1950s and my family has grown to love this place just like they did.

Our newspaper is an award-winning weekly paper that focuses almost exclusively on this beautiful, friendly community in Middle Georgia. We are the only media that covers Monroe County relentlessly and almost exclusively. Monroe County has been very good to the Reporter and we will continue to keep our gaze first here at home. That's something ABC, CNN, the Macon Telegraph and WMAZ will never do. And while the big daily papers struggle, I'm proud to say that last year was our best year ever at the paper. We're not going anywhere.

Secondly, I am a husband and a dad. I have a wonderful wife Cassie who is director of the operating room here at Monroe County Hospital. My children? Well, Abbie, 7, is a first grader at T.G. Scott Elementary and Park, 4, is about to graduate from pre-school (we're so proud :-)

Finally, I am a terrorist. That's right. According to the Department of Homeland Security, law enforcement should be very concerned about pro-life, Christian, right-wing extremists committing acts of terror against the U.S. Well, since I am a pro-life conservative, so I want to thank President Obama for helping me learn my true identity.

No, it's not terror that I promote, but a return to the vanishing values our forefathers held dear: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We Americans established in our founding documents that our rights come from God, not from government, and that government must be restrained by law to keep from diluting those rights. That's why many of the first 10 amendments to our Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, begin with the words, "Congress shall not..." Sadly, our current administration doesn't seem to recognize any limits on its power or authority, and that puts all of our freedoms in jeopardy. That's something else we can talk about...On the Porch -- Uninterrupted.

Hi Will,
I think it's great that you've breathed new life in the Reporter and branched out into the blogosphere. This post is a nice introduction in many ways. But please be careful about claiming yourself to be a terrorist in the eyes of Homeland Security. You are, as many, many, many people across the nation are, a pro-life conservative. However, you are no extremist. From what I can tell, you have respect for the rule of law. You use legal means to express your opinions. You are not in the same category as Scott Roeder, the man who shot Dr. George Tiller and who claims that more violence is coming. Saying that President Obama thinks you are a terrorist may be flashy and fun, but it is just wrong.
I was living in New York when real terrorists attacked the United States - no one, not even President Obama, thinks you are in their league.
