Public schools -- the last monopoly

Why do public schools lag behind private schools in student achievement?

The video sums it up well with one word: Monopoly.

Watch it here.

I would love to see the Monroe County school board try creative, innovative ideas to introduce more choice and competition into our local schools. For instance, let parents decide whether their kids go to Sutton, Scott or Hubbard. But, Will, you say, what if they all want to go to the same school -- and you wouldn't have room.

Question: If parents don't want to go to School A, then maybe that School A needs major changes. And if they all want to go to School B, then it's the school board's job to find a way to meet the needs of those parents. Or at least, that's how it would work if it wasn't a monopoly.

As with anything the government tries to control, it ruins. Government schools were originally introduced to produce a labor force for the nation. The intentions were not to 'educate' but to train students, using minimal funds, to work in the factories during the industrial revolution period. It appears, things have not changed much, except for the fear of loosing control of indoctrinating our children. Privatization is the answer. Give the people the power of choice.(Like that is going to ever happen.)
