Call Jim Marshall - Vote on biggest tax ever is today!

The House of Representatives is set to vote today on a cap and tax bill which President Obama admitted in his campaign would put coal plants like Plant Scherer out of business and would result in big hikes in power bills.
Our congressman, Democrat Jim Marshall of Macon, has apparently not made up his mind about how he'll vote.
Iain Murray of National Review Online reports on shenanigans last night in Congress that show Democrats are desperate to get the votes to pass this monstrosity:

"The stink surrounding the Pelosi-Waxman-Markey cap-and-tax bill has become vomit-inducing overnight. The Democrats have decided to replace the 1091-page bill with a 300-page bill that will be debated for no longer than three hours today. So your elected representatives will have virtually no time to debate the merits of an economy-spanning bill they will not have had time to read. Speaker Pelosi and her sidekick Waxman are displaying nothing more than complete contempt for the democratic process."

What a disgusting attempt to shove this down our throats and destroy more of the U.S. economy. Contact Jim Marshall at (202) 225-6531 or e-mail Jim.Marshall@mail.house.gov and tell him to vote NO on cap and trade.

Will, it's the American people who keep voting these people into office. The politicians are just giving us what we asked for. If we don't like what they are doing we need to hold them accountable during their term, and vote them out in the next election. But we don't we keep the same ole people in year after year.

The republican party has none one to blame but themselves for the current situation. What was once a party of pragmatism has evolved into a party ran by those of religious furor and fueled by the likes of Limbaugh who appeals to emotion above intellect.

Tell Marshall NO on cap and trade today

Today we should learn whether our congressman, Jim Marshall, is willing to crater the U.S. economy and hurt American families to appease environmental extremism dressed up as pseudo-science.

The U.S. House is expected to vote today on cap and trade legislation, which is basically a tax on the use of energy. The Democrats believe they can change the weather (ie global warming) by imposing more burdens and regulations on commerce, autos and power plants.

Your power bills will go up if this becomes law.

My friend Erick Erickson, editor of Redstate.com and Macon resident, has a few interesting quotes showing even Democrats understand this:

Democrat John Dingell (D-MI) says is "a tax and it’s a great big one."

Democrat Charlie Melancon (D-LA) says, "I believe this bill would create an undue burden on families who are already paying too much in energy bills."

Democrat Mike Ross (D-AR) says of Cap and Trade, "‘If you don’t like $4-a-gallon gasoline, you’re really not going to like your electric bill sometime between now and 2030."

So, contact Jim Marshall at (202) 225-6531 or e-mail Jim.Marshall@mail.house.gov and tell him to vote NO on cap and trade.

I thought this bill was only for big companies, to make them energy efficient, so that our power bills would not go up.

The tax will hit big companies, but guess where big companies get their money from: customers. If you have electricity in your home, that means you. A power company can only pay taxes by hiking the rates we pay. Class warfare against the "rich" and "big companies" winds up hurting all of us. It's TRUE trickle down economics. Click the link to see the Wall Street Journal's excellent editorial on the subject today. Key sentence: "Americans should know that those Members who vote for this climate bill are voting for what is likely to be the biggest tax in American history." Need way say more?

Yes, I see your point. However, I believe the goal is to become more energy efficient, and to find alternate energy sources. That can only help in the long run.

The federal government wants to get into your home. They want to control your homeowner association. Control is power. Power is $$$ to the politician. Many, many thanks to Rep Marshall for voting NO to the horrible, corrupt cap and trade bill.

Georgia Theater

Most of those who've attended the University of Georgia have probably spent at least a few evenings while in Athens at the Georgia Theater. It's an old downtown cinema house converted into a live concert hall and bar, complete with a balcony. One thing I remember about the place was the floors. They were disgusting -- barf, beer, cigarette butts and old gum. Sadly, fire gutted the place this morning. The story brought back a flood of memories, or at least the ones I can remember.
I saw the Dave Matthews Band there when I was matriculating (I love that word), and supposedly MTV taped the concert to air on cable. I confess I cannot name one Dave Matthews song, but it was "the cool thing to do," so there I was. Ah, the misspent days of youth. Thank God I survived my prodigal years. Read about the fire here.

The Best Water

South Monroe County has the best water in the country.
Really. The water the county provides to its 1,354 customers on the south end was named the best-tasting water in the USA this week at the convention of the American Water Works Association in San Diego. Read about it here.
The water actually is treated and distributed by the Macon Water Authority. But the MWA provides the water for the south Monroe County system -- after a 50 percent mark-up of course. But it sure tastes good.
Marie Allen, manager of the county water system, said the award is good news. She said the key is the way the Macon Water Authority treats water before pumping it out to customers. Macon's water comes from the Ocmulgee River.

"The water actually is treated and distributed by the city of Macon"
Actually the Macon Water Authority is a separate government from the City of Macon.

A hill to die on

What would Obamacare mean for you? Government control. The death of private insurance. Nationalized medicine will mean the end of America as we know it. And if we ruin America's health care, where will the Canadians go for good medical care? See Karl Rove's article here.

How much do we pay them?

Did you ever wonder what salaries we as taxpayers pay our school teachers, principals and other state employees? Well now you can know. Check it out at here. Kudos to the state of Georgia for creating this search engine, which tracks the pay of every state employee. Transparency in government is the only way we as taxpayers can hold our government accountable.

I'm proud that Georgia teachers are now among the best-paid in the nation. But we as taxpayers have every right to know how much they make. And we should expect a return on our investment.

I too think it's great that we pay our teachers well. I'm not so sure we are getting a return on our investment. I hear teachers say all the time "teaching isn't what is used to be." As a parent I sometimes feel that teachers aren't what they used to be. Things are certainly different from when I was a kid.

I agree with the previous post. Everything about education has changed, including teachers attitudes about teaching and students. There was a time when teaching was the most respectable position in the world. Now most people view it like any other job. It's no different than a doctor or lawyer or truck driver or waitress. Parents are fed up with the teachers who abuse the power given to them. Some teachers think they are untouchable, and that gives all teachers a bad name.

Are we getting out money's worth? Is there a definitive return on our investment? I think not. The notion that the high school administrators have about having a 100% graduation rate by 2014 is a good one. As long as they go about it the right way. Some of these students are falling through the cracks and nothing is being done about it. Any school district can graduate a student who makes A's and B's. What are you going to do about the students who make D's and F's. How are you reaching out to those kids?

I am a teacher at the highschool. I have a child at MP and Hubbard Middle. There is a huge difference in teachers attitudes between the two schools. The teachers at the highschool abuse the power given to them, because they are allowed to do so by the administrators. It is just a fact some teachers can do whatever they want, and some cannot. There are politics no matter what profession your in.

That's a good question. What are you doing to help the kids who make D's and F's. You can't say your schools of excellence if you don't include ALL students.

I took a substantial pay cut from a neighboring county to have the opportunity to teach in Monroe Co. The difference in pay came from Monroe County's lower local supplement. While our salaries are available for public record, I am uncomfortable with the way this is presented. It appears that the general public believes that my salary is paid fully from local tax dollars. The state pays the majority of our salaries. The general public believes that we teach for 180 days and laze around during the summer. For the record, I just finished up my school year yesterday. I noticed that several of my colleagues were also working. If I am lucky, I will get two weeks to relax and rest. I will be renewing my certification this year so I will be working on that throughout the school year and next summer, at my own expense. I am one of those teachers who makes at the upper tier because I have over 20 years experience with an Ed.S degree. I work very hard and challenge my students. I have high expectations for my students. I am very happy and proud to be a teacher but I feel that I am being judged negatively because I chose to better myself with advanced degrees.

I understand the teacher on the last post and commend you on your education and think your pay should be based on that. My problem is with a coach that teaches ISS half a day and makes over $50,000 and another coach that teaches weightlifting and makes over $70,000 just because they are coaches. There seems to be a lot of diffference in their pay and an enlish teachers pay.

If the 2nd grade teacher has a Doctorate degree, or is a National Board Certified Teacher, would you still have a problem with her salary? Maybe she works in an after school program, which is added in to her salary. There are many factors that go in to determining a teacher's salary.

I have a big problem with a weightlifting coach making $70,000, and a "trainer" making over $60,000. Weightlifting should not be considered a class at MP. It should be done after school as a part of practice. These two jobs can be privately contracted out, which would save the BOE at least $50,000 when you consider the cost of health benefits these two employees are receiving. As always, the coaches are treated like Kings.

Okay. Why did you take a "substantial pay cut" to work in Monroe Co., only to complain that your renewing your certification this year on your own time and expense? I am not in education, but nursing. I am also going back to school on my own time and at my own expense. My sister works full time on the base with 10 paid holidays, she too is going back to school on her own time and at her own expense. Don't expect me to be sympathetic towards you.

According to the BOE the point of the higer salaries is to attract the "BEST" teachers. If the second grade teacher is not producing in the classroom then it's a waste of money. What I mean by producing is high test scores, meets or exceeds on on the CRCT. In other words, no failing student in her class.
